Enhanced Data rates for GSM Evolution. EDGE is an extension of GPRS as a technology, dramatically increasing the potential data rates that can be achieved wirelessly. EDGE uses clever software on the network to increase the data throughputs by as much as 8 times over GPRS. In South Africa, EDGE is supported by all of the operators. Data speeds supported in SA range up to a theoretical maximum of 236kbps, but as a technology, EDGE can be enhanced to deliver more than 400kbps. EDGE gives very wide coverage for the network and suits the SA environment very well.
